Petra, one of the world wonders and legendary "rose red city, half as old as time", is the biggest archaeological treasure of Jordan and recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

It is an enormous, unique city, engraved into the steep rock face by the Nabataeans, an Arab people who established here more than 2000 years ago, turning it into an important connection for the silk, spice and other trade routes that linked China, India and southern Arabia with Egypt, Syria, Greece and Rome.

REASONS TO GO

One of the most mysterious and fascinating places on earth.

BEST TIME TO GO

The best time to visit Petra is in spring, from March to May.

ORIENTATION

The entrance to Petra is through long, narrow gorge – The Siq, which is flanked on both sides by 80 metres high cliffs. Just walking along the Siq is an experience itself. The colours and patterns of the rocks are stunning. As you get to the end of the Siq you will take your first glimpse of the Treasury - Al-Khazneh. You will be amazed by the natural magnificence of this place and its exceptional architectural achievements. There are complex rock-cut tombs with elaborated carvings, a roman-style theatre, obelisks, temples, sacrificial altars, and high above, overlooking the valley, is the extraordinary Ad-Deir Monastery.

In Petra there are also two museums; the Petra Archaeological Museum and the Petra Nabataean Museum.
