The Garden Route in the Western Cape is one of South Africa's most important tourist attractions. The central part of the Garden Route is shaped by the coastline of the Indian Ocean, being bordered in the north by the Little Karoo, a semi-desert region.

ORIENTATION
The Garden Route extends on the southern coast, from Heidelberg to the Tsitsikamma Forest and Storms River.
The coastal drive connects a group of appealing towns surrounded by natural beauty. Along the way, it is possible to practice scuba diving, abseiling, fishing and many other water sports.
The Tsitsikamma National Park, suspended on a turbulent Indian Ocean shore is one of South Africa´s most spectacular protected areas, combining sea and land attractions. Its indigenous forests are a sanctuary for birdlife. The Klein Karoo is one of the most geologically fascinating parts of South Africa, with its immense mountains and steep gorges.
The Cango Caves located outside the city of Oudtshoorn are also an interesting site, with a series of caverns and chambers naturally hewn out of limestone.
BEST TIME TO GO
The Garden Route has Mediterranean type of weather, with warm summers and mild winters. It is one of the most important rainfall regions in South Africa and therefore the winter months tend to be quite rainy.
With its beautiful beaches, the sun lovers will find the best time to visit is between November and April (summer months).
The Knysna Oyster Festival in July is also a good time to visit the Garden Route, though it can be quite crowded.
The whale season, between June and November is the best time to observe these splendid animals along the coast.
HOW TO GET THERE
The nearest international airports are in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.
TRAVELLING AROUND
The best way to get around on the Garden Route is to rent a car.
