Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa and one of the 40 largest metropolitan areas in the world. This city is the basis of a major gold and diamond trade and is recognized as the financial capital of South Africa.
The gleaming contemporary skyscrapers combined with 19th century architecture, Indian bazaars and African muti shops (with its traditional healers) give the city a special energy and attractiveness. The city has amazing natural background, adventure sports and the world’s foremost site at Sterkfontein.

ORIENTATION
An easy way to know where you are in Johannesburg is by finding the two telecommunication towers on the horizon.
They are the best landmarks, as they are both very high and easy to distinguish.
The Hillbrow tower is positioned close to the city centre and the Brixton tower is out, to the west of the city.
If the Hillbrow tower is to the left of the Brixton tower, then you are in the north and if the Hillbrow tower is closer than the Brixton tower, then you are in the east.
BEST TIME TO GO
The weather is usually exceptional. The summer months (December, January and February) are hot, with almost no wind and with sporadic, impressive afternoon thunderstorms.
HOW TO GET THERE
O.R Tambo International Airport is Johannesburg main airport. There are many flights to Johannesburg from major cities all over the world, as well as frequent local flights. The airport is located east of Johannesburg, 24 kilometres from the city centre. It's a fast drive by hotel shuttle, hired car or taxi to your destination.
TRAVELLING AROUND
Johannesburg has a limited, unreliable and old public transportation.
Renting a car is the best way for you to explore the city and the surroundings.
You can also take a taxi to move around, but it is a quite expensive option. Use the taxi ranks and always try to agree a price when you phone. Always have a few taxi telephone numbers with you to avoid being stuck anywhere.
TIP
Be aware that Johannesburg has very high crime levels day and night. However, like many cities with a crime problem some places are quite safe while others can be quite dangerous, and this may depend on whether it's day or night.
