Dar es Salaam is Tanzania's largest city, with its picturesque harbor and plenty of historic buildings, shops and good restaurants to keep you busy for a few days. The city has a mixture of influences African, Arab and Indian still maintaining close ties to its roots Swahili.

WHEN TO GO
The best times to visit are between June and September, after the rainy season where you can find cooler temperatures and a lower level of humidity.


GET THERE
The International Ariport Dar es Salaam is the basis of international and domestic Tanzania. Most of all domestic flights and international flights depart from Terminal Two (the terminal "new"). Many flights in small aircraft (including most flights Zanzibar) and more charters depart from Terminal One (terminal "old"), about 700m below.


GETTING AROUND
Walking through the center of Dar is a good way to see the city and probably the best way to go. In general people will leave it alone except for the occasional greeting.


TAXIS
There are no formal taxi companies in Dar es Salaam or any contact center accessible 24 hours a day (or anytime!). However, taxi drivers are regulated by the government. Look for white patches and the number painted on the side of the cab.


BUS
All other buses leave from the central bus station in Dar Es Salaam in Ubungo, west of the city where you can find buses to most cities.


RENTAL CARS
Rental cars can be arranged through most hotels. Besides holes, ready to deal with aggressive taxi drivers and the characteristic dalla-dallas,


TIPS
Save money on your clothing due to the speed of pickpockets.


MONEY
The official currency is the Tanzanian shilling Tanzanian shillings in 1000 and equal to about 0.5 Euros.
