REASONS TO GO

Russia’s’ heart and soul, dotted with churches and historical monuments

The trendy cafés and clubs

The Kremlin and the Red Square

BEST TIME TO GO

Winter is a chilly season to visit this city. The best time to visit is from late spring to late summer, when the weather is more pleasant to wander around the streets and enjoy the open air spaces and parks.

ORIENTATION

Moscow is a large city placed on the Moskva River, flowing all the way through the city. Most of the principal attractions are on the northern side of the river. The other major watercourse is the Yauza River, which flows into the Moskva east of the Kremlin.

Much of Moscow's geography is based on the many 'Ring Roads' that circle the city at different distances from the centre, usually draw round the walls that used to enclose Moscow.

The innermost ring road, containing the principal places to visit, is the Boulevard Ring (Bulvarnoye Koltso), With Red Square and the Kremlin forming the very centre. It runs from the Christ the Savior Cathedral in south-west central Moscow, to the Yauza River in south-east central Moscow.

HOW TO GET THERE

Moscow has three main international airports:

·      Sheremetyevo International Airport Terminal 2

The easiest option to get to the city centre is taking the Aeroexpress train that runs every 30 minutes, between Sheremetyevo-2 and Savyolovsky Station in northern Moscow. The trip lasts about half an hour.

There is also a regular marshrutnoye taksi, a minibus that runs along a fixed route for a fixed fare and allows passengers to get on and off wherever they want, that goes until Rechnoy Vokzal, the nearest metro station.

The taxi ride to the city centre should take around 45 minutes, depending on traffic, and costs over € 60.

·      Domodedovo International Airport

An express train leaves every 30 minutes to the Paveletsky Station at the south end of the Garden Ring in about 45 minutes. Vans also run between Domodedovo and the Domodedovskaya metro station (on the green line). The ride takes 25-30 minutes. Taxis to the center usually take one hour and cost over € 60.

·      Vnukovo International Airport

An express train runs to the Kievsky Station every hour taking around 35 minutes.

Vnukovo Airport is also connected to the Yugo-Zapadnaya metro by minivan. A taxi from Vnukovo to the city centre takes at least 35 minutes and costs around € 42.

TRAVELLING AROUND

By Taxi

Many Moscow drivers are pleased to take you a ride for a few extra rubles, so taxis are cheap and very easy to find. When you go on the street just make a sign and some driver will stop. Be aware of the fact that some less serious people can charge you overpriced rates. Try to agree on the fare before entering in the car. You can also call an official taxi to take you to your destiny. A trip within the city centre shouldn’t cost much more than €6.

You can also rent-a-car or even rent-a-car with driver, which is not that much more expensive.

By Metro

Moscow's subway system is very efficient and has beautiful stations. In the centre, all places are close from some metro station, and they are also well distributed all over the suburbs.

Some of the most stunning stations are on the circle line, but Arbatskaya on the dark blue line, Novoslobodskaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii and Mayakovskaya are really worth visiting.

By Foot

In the city centre The Boulevard Ring, Red Square and Alexandrovsky Gardens are some of the  most beautiful and pleasant places to visit on foot.

By Bus, Trolleybus and Tram

In some parts of Moscow the bus, trolleybus and tram are the only public transport service, although they don’t work as efficiently as the underground. The good thing is that you get to see more of the city. You can usually buy tickets from the driver and stamp them in a machine on the bus.
