ORIENTATION
Anchorage is located in South Central Alaska. It is a little north of Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki and St. Petersburg, but not as far north as Murmansk or Reykjavik. It is northeast of the Alaska Peninsula, Kodiak Island and Cook Inlet, north of the Kenai Peninsula, northwest of Prince William Sound and Alaska Panhandle, and almost immediately south of Mount McKinley / Denali.
The city is in a strip of coastal plain and extends to the lower slopes of the Chugach Mountains Alpine. To the south is Turnagain Arm, a fjord that has some of the highest tides in the world. Knik Arm, another inlet, lies to the west and north. The Chugach Mountains form the eastern limit to the development, but not to the city limits, which covers part of the wild alpine territory of Chugach State Park.
The seaside city consists mostly of treacherous mudflats. Newcomers and tourists are warned not to walk in this area because of extreme tidal changes and the very fine glacial silt.
WHEN TO GO
Anchorage has a subarctic climate with a strong influence each cruise which reduces temperatures. The average summer temperatures are between 13 ° C to 26 ° C and in winter, -15 ° C to -1 ° C. Maximum varying between 12 and 32 ° C in summer and between 1 and -35 ° C in winter. Minimum between 5 and 17 ° C in summer is between -5 and -48 ° C in winter.
In summer there is rarely zero temperatures. Precipitation occurs with more intensity in the summer, especially between August and October, the months with more rain is August. The period with less rainfall occurs between January and May, when it rains less than 90 mm, and April is the driest month. TAXIS
Taxi services are in Anchorage Ted Stevens International Airport. In addition, taxi services are available to other destinations like Alyeska, Whittier, Eagle River and Peters Creek, to name a few.
BUS
People Mover (ticket adult / child $ 1.75 / 1) is the local bus service and its main terminal is at the Downtown Transit Center.
CAR HIRE
Cheapwheels Rent-A-Car (907-561-8627, 3811 Spenard Rd) is compact (daily / weekly $ 50 / 300) and unlimited mileage for rentals of three days or more. Denali Car Rental (907-276-1230, 1209 Gambell St.) is subcompact (daily / weekly $ 55/330), with 150 miles included. Avoid taking a car at the airport because it will be hit by a tax of 32% rental, as opposed to 18% in the city.
