WHY GO

The gateway to the spectacular Alaska

The natural beauty of Alaska.

WHAT TO AVOID

Go in the winter months, it's too cold and has a few hours of Luminus.

ORIENTATION

Anchorage is located in South Central Alaska. It is a little north of Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki and St. Petersburg, but not as far north as Murmansk or Reykjavik. It is northeast of the Alaska Peninsula, Kodiak Island and Cook Inlet, north of the Kenai Peninsula, northwest of Prince William Sound and Alaska Panhandle, and almost immediately south of Mount McKinley / Denali.

The city is in a strip of coastal plain and extends to the lower slopes of the Chugach Mountains Alpine. To the south is Turnagain Arm, a fjord that has some of the highest tides in the world. Knik Arm, another inlet, lies to the west and north. The Chugach Mountains form the eastern limit to the development, but not to the city limits, which covers part of the wild alpine territory of Chugach State Park.

The seaside city consists mostly of treacherous mudflats. Newcomers and tourists are warned not to walk in this area because of extreme tidal changes and the very fine glacial silt.

WHEN TO GO

Anchorage has a subarctic climate with a strong influence each cruise which reduces temperatures. The average summer temperatures are between 13 ° C to 26 ° C and in winter, -15 ° C to -1 ° C. Maximum varying between 12 and 32 ° C in summer and between 1 and -35 ° C in winter. Minimum between 5 and 17 ° C in summer is between -5 and -48 ° C in winter.
