New York City is the biggest city in the USA, located on the eastern coast, by the Hudson River. The city, also known as the "Big Apple" is divided in five boroughs, each of them with a unique culture: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx and Staten Island.

New York City is one of the main centres of international finance, politics, media, music, film, fashion, and culture, and is for sure on of the most important and influential cities in the world. It is a cosmopolitan and energetic city, with immigrants from all over the world and being home to several world-class museums, art galleries, and theatres.

ORIENTATION

Manhattan borough is the centre of New York City, being located on a long and thin island in the middle of the Hudson River. Manhattan is separated from The Bronx on the north east by the Harlem River; from Queens and Brooklyn to the east and south by the East River. Staten Island lies to the south west, across Upper New York Bay.

Most of the city tourist attractions are to be found in Manhattan.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Probably, the best time to visit New York is from April to June and from September to November, when the temperatures are mild and the city landscape is at its best.

HOW TO GET THERE

There are three major airports serving New York City: John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark.

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is located in Queens approximately 15 miles southeast of Manhattan. When traffic is flowing well it takes about 30-45 minutes by car.

LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is located on the northern shore of Queens, about 9 miles from Manhattan. LaGuardia is accessible by local highways, a ferry from Manhattan and by helicopter and seaplane.

Newark International Airport (EWR) is located south of Newark on Newark Bay and is about 16 miles southwest from Manhattan and quite suitable from and to the west side of Manhattan.

Each airport is connected to the city by taxi or bus. Busses, subway trains and taxis offer the most suitable means of transportation. Commuter trains connect most of the close communities and neighbouring states.

TRAVELLING AROUND

There is no better way of visiting and getting around New York than walking.

By subway

A good way to move around in New York City is by using the subway. It connects all the most important point of the city in a short time.

You must have a MetroCard to enter the subway system. All stations have MetroCard machines or a token booth where you can buy cards.

By bus

There are many different bus lines, which provide good transport apart from the subway. Bus lines are recognized by letters followed by numbers. The letters indicate the borough in which the line operates.

By ferry

Ferries provide a good option to getting around New York. The most famous ferry is the Staten Island Ferry, running from the tip of Manhattan at Battery Park to Staten Island.

NEW YORK WATER TAXI
These water-borne cabs have certain advantages over the four-wheeled kind: You can’t get stuck in crosstown traffic, and you can cater a party on one (212-742-1969; all-day pass, $26; Statue of Liberty night cruise and helicopter flight, $249).

NY WATERWAY FERRY SERVICE
The growth of waterfront residential neighborhoods such as Williamsburg, Brooklyn, has made the water a sensible way for many to move about—and avoid jammed subways and rising bridge tolls. The privately operated ferries—which stop at Wall Street’s Pier 11, the World Financial Center, the end of West 39th Street, and various Brooklyn and New Jersey piers—aren’t yet part of the public transit system, but they are part of thousands of New Yorkers’ commutes (800-533-3779; all-day East River–crossing pass, $12; one-way East River crossings from $4).

By taxi

There are over 12.000 yellow cabs in NYC. Taxi is the fastest and easiest way to get around Manhattan. Rates are reasonable, particularly with 3 or more riders.
