ORIENTATION
Washington, D.C. is divided into four geographical quadrants of unequal size. Northwest is the largest of the four quadrants of the city, and the one with more important places to visit. It is located north of the National Mall and west of North Capitol Street and includes the central business district, the Federal Triangle, and the museums along the northern side of the National Mall.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The best time to visit Washington D.C. is spring or autumn. In winter the weather is quite freezing and in summer the city gets overcrowded with tourists.
HOW TO GET THERE
Washington, D.C., is served by three major airports.
Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, located in Arlington, just across the Potomac River, is the closest and most convenient, as it has its own Metro stop on the Blue/Yellow Lines. A taxi trip downtown costs only about $15.
Washington Dulles International Airport is located in Dulles. To get to the city, the best option may be the Washington Flyer coach, which travels every 30 minutes to and from the West Falls Church Metro (Orange Line) and takes 20–25 minutes. From there the Metro to downtown takes another 20-25 minutes. Another option is the 5A Metrobus, an express bus which stops at Herndon, Tysons Corner, Rosslyn (Blue and Orange Lines) and downtown's L'Enfant Plaza (Green, Yellow, Blue, and Orange Lines).
A taxi run to the centre costs about $50 and takes around 30 minutes.
Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is located 30 miles north-east of D.C. A cheap way to get to the city centre is taking the B30 express Metrobus to the Greenbelt Metro Station (Green Line) and then the Metro rail Greenbelt to downtown. A taxi run to the Washington centre costs about $60 and takes about 40 minutes.
TRAVELLING AROUND
The best way to get around in Washington is by Metrorail and Metro bus.
The DC Circulator is also a good option as it is really cheap and travels along 3 specific routes designed to easily connect the major tourist attractions. The yellow line travels from Georgetown to Union Station; the red line travels along historic 7th Street NW connecting the Southwest waterfront area to the Convention Centre and the purple line rides round the National Mall on the weekends with stops at many of the Smithsonian Institutions’ museums and galleries.
You can also take a taxi or buy a full-day ticket and hop on and off sightseeing buses like those run by Old Town Trolley or Gray Line.
